Surfaces to be treated must be free from dirt, dust, wax, grease, oils, visible moisture and previous film forming coatings. Maximum moisture content before coating 15% ideally in the range of between 10-12%
Acid reacting timbers such as Cherry, Maple, Ash etc. will require a pretreatment of HP Primer prior to the application of Aquafire HP to reduce the risk of substrate discolouration. Resinous or waxy timbers and some hardwoods such as Teak, Iroko and Afromosia should be carefully degreased with methylated spirits and allowed to dry.
Timber Preservatives - Should be allowed to dry fully prior to application of Aquafire HP. Vacuum impregnated timber may take several weeks to dry fully. Water repellent pretreatments are not suitable for overcoating with Aquafire HP System.
Untreated New Wood - Any knots or resinous areas should be cleaned using methylated spirit. Allow to dry and apply a suitable knotting compound in accordance with manufacturers instructions. Stained Wood - Wood can be stained to the required colour using a good water based wood stain which should be fully cured before overcoating. Do not use stains containing waxes or non-drying oils. Highly Absorbent Surfaces - Medium and low density fibreboards and certain hardwoods may have porous surfaces. This may also be the case for low density porous hardwoods and plywoods made from porous hardwoods. For this situation Aquafire HP Surface Primer should be applied and allowed to dry for 1 hour. Apply Aquafire HP System at the required loading following application procedure. Previous film forming coatings such as paint and varnish should be removed using conventional paint or varnish remover or by hot air stripping. This should be followed by thorough washing and sanding of the surface . All traces of dust should be removed. It is recommended that a trial application is carried out to ensure satisfactory penetration, adhesion and drying are achievable.
Note:- Discolouring - All timbers will naturally discolour due various reasons e.g. ageing, U.V., oxidisation, naturally occurring chemicals etc. The Aquafire HP System will not prevent this from happening.
It is always recommended that an application is carried out on a trial area.
•The surface can be lightly sanded with the grain using P400 grade abrasive.
•To enhance the grain of the wood a damp lint-free cloth should be wiped over the surface prior to application of the basecoat.
•For denibbing a fine grade abrasive such as P320 or P400 grade should be used.
•Power sanding will give the optimum finish.
