BE SURE TO CHECK THE SMALL PRINT!
We urge potential users and specifiers of flame retardant coatings to carefully check the small print in product manufacturer's literature before making a decision on materials to upgrade Standard Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) or Veneered MDF
We have evidence of some literature being misleading and/or easily misinterpreted. In one document, a bold print heading declares a product as a flame retardant coating whilst the small print states that the product will only maintain the classification of the substrate, but will not 'upgrade' it.
The fear is of course, that the bold lettering could be the only text read by the buyer applicator or specifier. In recent months, the company has come across typical miss-specifications for a 150 square metre ceiling in a public house and 1000 square metres of wall panelling
Ambiguous information, could be a matter of grave concern - literally. Such literature is encouraging the specification and use of these materials for timber surfaces for which they are not suitable, as they will only maintain a classfication. not upgrade them, Indeed, we believe that Aquafire HP flame retardant coating is the only independently tested product in the UK 'capable of upgrading' standard and veneered MDF to BS476 parts 6 and 7
We suggest that those responsible for using or specifying materials for those purposes check the small print carefully before proceeding. If not, in the event of a fire significant problems could ensue
